Forget This Cold Snap! Stay Cosy at Home With These Tips*

I think we were tricked a little into thinking that we weren’t having a ‘proper’ winter last year. December was so mild and I barely ever needed a hat, scarf or gloves. The new year decided that we did need a proper winter as it has been so cold! I always forget the amount of time it takes to defrost the car before going out on a morning.


If like me you’d rather stay indoors, then here are some tips for making sure that you stay all cosy and warm.


Change Your Duvet

If you find that you are cold at night, you might need a warmer duvet. There is no need to have the heating on all night if you can just get a different duvet. A good tog rating for winter weather is 12. If you share the bed with someone else and they are constantly warm, you can even get fancy duvets that have different tog ratings on each side. So you’ll both be the temperature that you like but not bothering the other person.

If that doesn’t sound like your thing, you could both get single duvets. Then there is no arguing over who has the most cover. You could use a throw or quilt over the top, so it still feels like you are in the same bed as each other.

Change Your Bedding

There is nothing better than new bed sheets. Plus, you could have the wrong material for keeping you warm. Cotton is cooling so those sheets might not be the best options to have. You could go for a cotton mix like cotton flannel, to make your bed nice and cosy. Choosing a few new chunky knit or faux fur cushions are great for snuggling up to. A new throw is a good idea too. Again go for a knit or a fleece material to keep in the warmth.

While you are changing up your bed, you might want to get a new mattress while you are there too. Then you’ll be super comfy and cosy in bed. Perhaps go for a luxury latex mattress from John Ryan by Design for some luxurious comfort.

Make sure that when you are washing your bedding that it will smell nice. It is so nice getting into fresh new bedding that smells fresh and clean too.

Use Rugs

You may have a home that is carpeted. If so, this won’t apply. If you have wooden or tiled floors, it can be such a nice feeling to have some rugs to walk on. In the morning, the floors in your home can be so cold that it makes getting out of bed even worse. A sheepskin rug is a cosy look or go for a bright coloured one to cheer yourself up this winter. Failing getting a rug, you could get yourself some cosy slippers to keep your feet nice and snug.

Open Windows

You might be wondering what I am on about when it is so cold outside. But it is important to air your rooms, even in the winter time. It helps prevent against mould and the spread of spores and bacteria. Just go room by room and open them for around 15 minutes each day. If you go room by room, it means you won’t have to sit in a room when it has the windows open. Oh, and remember to close them! Or you will be cold!

Light Candles

I just think that candles make a room feel so much cosier. In the dark evenings, it makes a room homely too. Light plenty of candles and then snuggle up with a blanket. Going for seasonal scents is a must too. It isn’t Christmas anymore but I think spicy scents like cinnamon or a scent like pine are so great during cold weather.

 

I think it is just important to stay practical and have things like your dressing gown or slippers close by your bed. It is rubbish when you have to drag yourself out of bed into a cold and dark room. At least, something like that will make getting out of bed a little easier.

  1. It has gotten so chilly lately! In the evenings you can find me layered x a hundred on the sofa, under a blanket with fluffy socks on. Candles always make it feel warmer and I can't resist a vanilla scented one!x *** Victoria's Reply *** 'Ooh yes, I was actually sat at my desk wrapped in a fleece throw the other day! My slippers have not yet been removed from my feet!'
