The Influence of Rugby on Street Fashion

What began as a purely functional garment with thick-knit and heavy collars built to withstand the rigours of the pitch has spent decades quietly working its way into mainstream wardrobes. And right now it's having one of its biggest cultural moments yet.

Tournament Season and Fan Identity

In the UK, the rugby shirt carries a dimension that goes well beyond fashion trends as an expression and declaration of belonging. The Six Nations 2026 carries on the annual trend of jerseys flooding the terraces, pubs, and living rooms of the UK and Ireland.

This sense of identity is something brands have leaned into heavily, with official kit partners including Macron, Umbro, and Adidas all producing supporter ranges designed to be worn well beyond match day.

From the Pitch to the Pavement

Rugby has also gained territory beyond the stands, and while its iconic shirt's crossover into casual fashion is nothing new, its current status feels earned rather than engineered.

Its journey arguably began on the high-fashion runway at Louis Vuitton's Fall 2022 show, where rugby shirts were paired with ruffled feminine pieces. By Spring 2024, other brands were featuring rugby shirts prominently on the runway.

Meanwhile, the 2024 Paris Olympics gave rugby sevens a global audience at exactly the moment fashion was already circling. US rugby sevens player Ilona Maher became an overnight sensation of the Paris games.

Her following has grown from 2.5 million to 9 million, she signed an Adidas partnership, and featured on a Sports Illustrated cover that brought women's rugby into mainstream culture in a way no runway show could.

Consumer appetite has followed suit, with searches for rugby shirts have risen 75%, and demand for women's rugby shirts up 53%.

A Wardrobe Staple Reimagined

What makes the rugby shirt so enduring is its versatility: designers experiment with elongated silhouettes, cropped cuts, and architectural collars, while stripes are reimagined from bold varsity-style panels to subtle tonal bands.

On the high street, accessible versions from Uniqlo x JW Anderson and Hush sit alongside heritage options from Kent & Curwen and Rowing Blazers, ensuring the trend spans budgets and demographics alike.

The style has been repositioned as a preppy, gender-neutral staple, with bold colourways and versatile silhouettes that cater to both casual and polished looks.

Rugbycore Is Here to Stay

The 2024 Summer Olympics and high fashion contributed to the rugby shirt's renewed cultural visibility, cementing what many are now calling ‘rugbycore’ as a genuine and sustained fashion movement. For longtime adopters and newcomers alike, it means one of sport's most iconic garments is finally getting the wardrobe recognition it deserves.
