When does the £50 credit actually land?

Honestly, I can't remember the exact number of days for ours, it felt like it landed pretty much as soon as our switch went through, but I wouldn't want to promise that as gospel. From what I've seen elsewhere, most people get their credit within a few weeks of the switch completing and the first direct debit payment going through.

If it hasn't shown up after a few weeks, it's worth checking your account or dropping Octopus's customer service a message rather than assuming the referral didn't track.

Does the referral link work if I switch through a comparison or cashback site?

Generally, no. If you go through a price comparison website or a separate cashback site to switch, the referral credit usually won't apply, you'd be going through their tracking instead of mine.

If you're switching a business energy account rather than a home one, the referral reward is higher, £75 each rather than £50. Terms shift from time to time, so it's worth checking the current business offer on Octopus's site before you switch, but the referral link itself works the same way.

Octopus Wheel of Fortune: The spin the wheel game

One of my favourite bits about the Octopus app is the monthly spin the wheel game. They give away £90,000 each month.

We get four goes a month: two for having gas with them and two for electric, I think it's two on each because we have a smart meter, which gets you an extra spin.

Prizes go up to £512 in credit, though we've mostly just won £1 here and there so far. Still, it's free, takes seconds, and it's worth doing every month if you're already a customer.

Why we're still with Octopus Energy

A few reasons we've stuck around:

• Their app is genuinely easy to use for checking usage and topping up
• We don't have a direct debit set up, we contacted customer service to get our bills set to the 1st of each month, and we pay by credit or debit card in the app or on the website
• That said, you might save more overall by paying via direct debit, so it's worth weighing up against the flexibility of paying manually
• Customer service has been straightforward whenever we've needed it
• We like that they run on renewable energy, and they offer green gas options too
• No exit fees on their standard variable tariff, though some newer fixed-rate tariffs now carry an exit fee if you leave early, this is shown upfront before you sign up, so worth checking the specific tariff
• We also have solar panels now, and although Octopus weren't our installer, they buy back our excess generation, so it's all handled through the same account

None of this is to say Octopus is the right fit for everyone. Always worth comparing unit rates and standing charges against your current supplier before switching, a referral credit is a nice bonus but it shouldn't be the only reason you move.
