  1. Money making blogger interview with Justine of www.girlgonedreamer.co.uk

Welcome to my Money Making Blogger interview series where I will interview bloggers who are making money from their blogs!

A new post every Monday at 12pm from a money making blogger sharing their experience and advice.

I've been a full time blogger officially since May 2017.  For one year before this I made a part time wage from my blog and worked a part time job.  I started blogging in April 2013 and never even realised I could make a real living from my blog and thought it was just a hobby.  So for the first three years I didn't make any money from my blog.

Before properly monetizing my blog I did have a few opportunities land in my inbox which I politely declined as I wasn't really sure what they were.  Then I stumbled upon some blogger income reports and realised there was some real money to be made.  I’ve never looked back and I started collaborating with brands and putting a value on my time and worth, instead of accepting unpaid collaborations.  I now make a full time living from my blog and I want you to realise you can do this too, if you want to.

I get to write every day and make money by doing what I love.  It’s amazing and still amazes me each day, even two years into making money from my website.  It’s not without a lot of hard work though, so don’t be fooled into thinking you simply set up a website and voila, income starts rolling in.  If only!  I work 30-40 hours per week currently and my blog is my life!

In this series I am going to interview other bloggers who also make money from their blogs to hopefully inspire people to start a blog if they wish or to make that leap to monetizing content.  I also find it so interesting to learn what other bloggers are up to and even us full time bloggers can learn from each other and inspire one another.

Money making blogger interview with Justine of www.girlgonedreamer.co.uk

Hello, please introduce yourself and your money making blog.

Hello I'm Justine and I earn my second income from www.girlgonedreamer.co.uk

How long have you been blogging for?

    3 years

When did you begin to monetize?

I was approached by a PR firm in February last year, they wanted me to write a sponsored post. Once the post was published I received positive feedback from both the client and the PR people which then gave me the confidence to do more.

What sort of income do you make from your blog each month? Pocket money, part time, full time or feel free to share the figure.

I can't give an accurate figure as it really does vary month by month, however I will say that I definitely earn a substantial part time income from it. It's helping to pay off my debt.

What steps did you take in the beginning to monetize your blog?

Once I was initially approached and I realised it was something I could do, I started putting out weekly tweets to see if I could generate more interest. I'd also look at opportunities on both Twitter and Facebook blog groups and I'd apply to any and everything.

How do you make money from your blog?

    From sponsored posts and advertising.

Has it been an easy process?

It's been an altogether enjoyable process, definitely not easy though. In fact it's been rather challenging at times - more so when I've been sleep deprived with deadlines looming. That said, I believe that hard work and consistency pays off. Being able to earn money doing something I love is quite the achievement.

What are the top three ways you make money from your blog?

Sponsored posts, hosting pre-written content and advertising. I've yet to get to grips with affiliate marketing.

What is your favourite way to make money from your blog?

Definitely writing my own (sponsored) posts. I've been writing ever since I learned how to at the grand old age of five or six. I simply love getting creative.

How much do you really work on your blog?  Be honest.

Honestly? The only time I don't is when I'm at my day job. And even then I'm often scribbling notes onto post it's if I get an idea. I also check my emails in my lunch break. I allow myself one evening off each week to watch TV, usually Greys Anatomy or Suits. Every other evening I switch the laptop on as soon as I get in and I work up until bedtime which is usually between eleven and half one depending on my workload. I also give myself a day off at weekends. It's pretty full on at the moment.

What are your aims for your blog in the future?

I'd like to re-introduce book reviews as they used to be very popular. Potentially more style type posts too although time will tell. Other than that and trying affiliate marketing it'll be more of the same. I do have many other career aspirations which could launch off the back of GirlGoneDreamers success but for now my lips are sealed.

If someone is totally new to blogging, what would you advise they concentrate on to help make their blog a money making success?

I always tell newbie bloggers to firstly write what they are passionate about, don't force it and don't try to be something that you're not. Also never compare yourself to other bloggers. It can be soul destroying. Other than that, the key is to write engaging and valuable content, and by valuable I mean be of value to the reader i.e. answer a question/teach them something. Consistency is important too as is putting yourself out there. It's a heavily saturated market so you need to really network and utilise your social media. If you do all the above then chances are you'll get noticed eventually, but don't be afraid to also apply for as many opportunities as you can.

Are there any drawbacks to running a money making blog?

I'm not going to lie, I hate the faff and anxiety that comes with self assessment and tax. It's why I'd put off being self employed for years, fear of doing it wrong etc. But it's not that bad, there's plenty of people you can ask for help. Other than that the only drawback is the chasing clients for money when they don't pay on time. Comes with the territory though and most clients are great.

What’s the best thing about blogging for an income?

That I'm being paid to do something I love. It's also really great because it's helping me to pay off my debts.

Would you blog even if you couldn’t make money doing it?

For sure! I blogged for two years before I made any money and to be honest it was a real surprise when I was first approached to write a sponsored post. I simply love it!

Do you think blogging is here to stay?

Honestly no I don't, I think people will get bored eventually and will want something fresh and newer, it's human nature to get fed up after a while.

Thank you so much for taking part in my Money Making Blogger interview series and best of luck with your blog!

MONEY MAKING BLOGGER INTERVIEW Tina from mothergeek.co.uk

Hello, please introduce yourself and your money making blog.

I’m Tina and I blog at mothergeek.co.uk.  I've been blogging for seven years and began to monetize last year.

What sort of income do you make from your blog each month?

    Around £500 a month

What steps did you take in the beginning to monetize your blog?

My blog was well established and I had been accepting product reviews for years before I decided to monetise my blog. I’d been turning down sponsored post emails for years, but when my husband’s health deteriorated, it felt right to accept them.

How do you make money from your blog?

I accept sponsored posts, I monetise my YouTube channel and I do occasional paid social media shares

What are the top three ways you make money from your blog?

Sponsored posts, monetise your YouTube channel once it’s active enough, sponsored social media.

What is your favourite way to make money from your blog?

Sponsored posts are the easiest way, but I enjoy making videos the most.

How much do you really work on your blog?

Around 30 hours a week in term time and about 20 hours a week in school holidays. (Plus a lot of social media)

What are your aims for your blog in the future?

Continue to grow my DA and accept more guest posts from newer UK bloggers to help them boost theirs as well. I miss the blogging community from 2011-2013, since blogging and “influencing” exploded, it seems to be more competitive at times - I want to help newer bloggers feel part of a family like I did when I started, rather than a small fish in a big pond.

If someone is totally new to blogging, what would you advise they concentrate on to help make their blog a money making success?

You need to boost your DA if you want to be offered guest posts. To do that, you need to get your URL out there. Join in with linkys, do guest posts for other bloggers, make sure you add it to your social media platforms and comment on other blogs. Even no follow backlinks help to get your blog’s name out there. Don’t forget to make sure your blog has lots of fresh, well written content too though. (And make sure you use a spell checker). Brands want to place their products and links on websites which will show them off positively. Typos, grammatical errors and swearing will often put potential clients off.

Are there any drawbacks to running a money making blog?

Tax returns! Save all your receipts - Deduct everything you can! Make a spreadsheet and add income as and when it comes in - it’ll make the process much less painful.

What’s the best thing about blogging for an income?

It allows us to pay the mortgage! My hubby had to reduce his work hours and due to our son‘s Special Needs, a traditional 9-5 was never going to work for me.

Would you blog even if you couldn’t make money doing it?

Yes - I did for a long time.

Do you think blogging is here to stay?

Definitely. I think it’s constantly evolving though and it’s becoming harder to get noticed.

Thank you so much for taking part in my Money Making Blogger interview series and best of luck with your blog!

MONEY MAKING BLOGGER INTERVIEW OR GOREN CORD BUSTERS

Hello, please introduce yourself and your money making blog.

I'm Or Goren and I run Cord Busters, a blog for TV cord cutters and people who want to save money on their TV and entertainment costs.

How long have you been blogging for?

Cord Busters has been around for around 18 months, but I've been blogging on and off for almost 20 years (though when I started I don't think it was called blogging yet - it was just "writing on the internet"...)

When did you begin to monetize?

Right from the start - of course, Cord Busters didn't MAKE any money in its early days, but the monetization was there.

What sort of income do you make from your blog each month? Pocket money, part time, full time or feel free to share the figure.

It's getting close to part time, though there's still a lot of room for improvement.

What steps did you take in the beginning to monetize your blog?

Unlike some of my other blogs/websites throughout the years, this time I made sure to plan the monetization from the very beginning. That's not to say EVERY post had to have a "money angle", but it was always part of the plan. So other than basic ads (such as AdSense), I checked what affiliate options were out there for my blog's topic, and registered with them even before the blog was up.

How do you make money from your blog?

Mostly with affiliate offers, by writing reviews or guides that include links to those affiliates. But I always try and make sure the articles have the reader in mind first - and the affiliate offer second. So, for example, I won't write a positive review about a device/service I don't like, even if the money they offer is good.

Has it been an easy process?

It's an ongoing process - when you start, there's hardly any traffic, and even when the traffic grows, it takes time for the money to start rolling in. And then, there are still A LOT of ups and downs, sometimes for reasons you can't even understand, and you have to keep testing and changing things.

What are the top three ways you make money from your blog?

    Affiliate links and display ads.

What is your favourite way to make money from your blog?

By writing guides and How-Tos that have affiliate links in them. I like writing reviews as well, but guides always feel so useful to the reader - I genuinely feel like I'm helping the people who are going to read and use those guides (and indeed I get warm responses by email) - so being able to also make money with those guides is a good feeling.

How much do you really work on your blog?  Be honest.

It changes a lot and depends on my other projects - there are weeks in which I'll spend 30 hours writing articles for Cord Busters, and then weeks where I only do some maintenance for a couple of hours.

What are your aims for your blog in the future?

Because it's a very niched-down blog with a very specific topic, I want to grow it as much as I can, content and traffic-wise, and then perhaps open another one.

If someone is totally new to blogging, what would you advise they concentrate on to help make their blog a money making success?

Plan how you're going to make money with your blog from the very beginning - don't expect to earn right from the start, of course, but make sure there's money "available" in the field you're writing in. It can be very discouraging to have a rather successful blog, only to find out later it's almost impossible to monetise that blog properly - and that has happened to me in the past.

Are there any drawbacks to running a money making blog?

It's a constant struggle, and much of the things that can happen are not under your control. Suddenly Facebook change their algorithm, your Google rankings tank for no apparent reason, or one of your big affiliates shuts down. And when there's money involved, and your livelihood depends on it - these changes can be very stressful.

What’s the best thing about blogging for an income?

I get to do what I like - write and help/entertain people with my writing.

Would you blog even if you couldn’t make money doing it?

Yes, but would have to devote less time to it.

Do you think blogging is here to stay?

Definitely, though it might take additional forms and formats, some of which are already here - vlogging, micro-blogging on social media sites, etc'.
