  1. Money making blogger interview with Alberto of Gameroom Vault

    Posted on

Welcome to my Money Making Blogger interview series where I interview bloggers who are making money from their blogs!

Read on to discover how they make money from blogging and the steps they took to monetize their blogs.  Feel inspired and learn something new from this series.  Also learn how many hours they spend on their blogs per week and what sort of income this provides.

I get to write every day and make money by doing what I love.  It’s amazing and still amazes me each day, even two years into making money from my website.  It’s not without a lot of hard work though, so don’t be fooled into thinking you simply set up a website and voila, income starts rolling in.  If only!  I work more hours per week than I did in any full-time employed job!

In this series I am going to interview other bloggers who also make money from their blogs to hopefully inspire people to start a blog if they wish or to make that leap to monetizing content.  I also find it so interesting to learn what other bloggers are up to.  Even full time bloggers can learn from each other and inspire one another.

    Money Making Blogger Interview

Tell us all about you and introduce your blog.

Hi, I'm Alberto Restrepo and I write about games and family activities at GameroomVault.com. I have two boys and we spend a lot of time playing games and having fun, so I really enjoy writing about these topics on my blog. We're always looking for new ways to spend time together, and when I was looking to make some extra money I thought this would be a great topic for a blog!

How long have you been blogging and when did you begin to make money?

I've been blogging about a year and a half. I think I started making money after about 3 months, but the dollar amounts were pretty small for a while. In the fall of 2018 things started to pick up and I've been making more money the past 4 or 5 months.

How much money do you make each month from blogging?

I guess I'd classify it as pocket money for now, but it might be in the part-time income range pretty soon. The fact that it's on an upward trend encourages me to keep going.

How do you make money blogging?

All of my income so far has come from affiliate marketing. That's what I started with because it's easy, but I may try some other things in the future. I've thought about display ads, but I'm not sure what impact they would have on my affiliate earnings. I like using affiliate links because I can tell people about products that me and my boys like, other people can get a great product, and I can make some money. It's a win-win as long as you're promoting good products and not just telling people to buy something that's junk.

How did you prep your blog to make money? Has it been easy?

The two keys for me are traffic and affiliate links. I use affiliate links in a lot of my content, so all I need to do is get the right visitors to the content (which is not always so easy). Aside from actually writing the content, trying different products and researching in order to write something useful is a big part of the process too.

What are your aims for your blog in the future?

I do plan to increase income, and I plan to do that by getting more traffic and continuing to use affiliate links. Google is my biggest source of traffic. I'd like to continue to increase that traffic, but I'd also like to do better with social networks. I'm especially interested in Pinterest, but I don't have that much experience with it yet. I plan to try using display ads on my blog, but if the affiliate revenue drops as a result of the ads, I'll take the ads down. I'm not sure when I'll try that, but probably within the next few months.

If someone is new to blogging, what should they focus on if they want to monetize?

Know your target audience. Don't publish random articles on lots of different topics because people aren't going to care about all of the things that you care about. Stick to one main topic and keep everything relevant. With that approach your blog will appeal to your target readers, and you'll be able to make money.

Can you think of 3 pros and 3 cons of blogging as a career choice?

Pros: 1) it's fun! 2) a lot of different ways to make money, and 3) it can open doors to other business and career opportunities. Cons: 1) it takes a lot of time, 2) you won't make money right away, 3) sometimes it feels like no one is reading.

What inspires you and what is the best thing about blogging?

My boys! I love having fun with them, and I get to write about many of the things that we enjoy. I'm also inspired to do the best I can to make money for them. I'd like to be able to make more money from my blog so I can work less at my full-time job and have more time at home.

Would you still blog even if you couldn’t make money doing it?

Yes, I would. I've had a few other blogs for fun over the years (they're not live anymore) and I've always enjoyed it. My current blog has lasted longer than my others because making money from it helps to make it worth my time, and it keeps me from jumping from one thing to the next.

Do you think blogging is here to stay?

Definitely! There are so many new blogs launching every day and I don't see that changing anytime soon. People love to be able to write about the things that they enjoy.

Thank you so much for taking part in my Money Making Blogger interview series and best of luck with your blog!

    Money Making Blogger Interview (1)

Tell us all about you and introduce your blog.

My name is Marc and I’m a personal finance blogger at VitalDollar.com. I’m 40 years old and I live in the United States with my wife and our two kids. I started VitalDollar.com in February of 2018 because I wanted to write about the personal finance lessons that I’ve learned over the years, and because I want to continue to learn more about finance. I write about topics related to saving money and making money, including a little bit about blogging.

How long have you been blogging and when did you begin to make money from your blog?

I started my first blog in 2007 and made some money within the first few months. I’ve been blogging full-time since 2008. That first blog grew pretty quickly and allowed me to leave my full-time job after about 1.5 years of working on the blog. I managed that blog until I sold in for $500,000 in 2013. After that, I had a few photography blogs, which I’ve also sold. In August of 2018, I sold my last photography blog for $216,000. After selling that photography blog, I’ve had more time to focus on Vital Dollar.

How much money do you make each month from blogging?

I’ve made a full-time income from blogging for the past 10+ years, but the numbers vary drastically. The main reason my income has big fluctuations is because I’ve sold several blogs over the years. When I sell one, I get a nice lump sum, but then my ongoing income drops since I no longer own the blog. I’ve been through this cycle a few times.

How do you make money blogging?

I’ve made money from banner ads, AdSense, affiliate programs, sponsored content, selling my own digital products, and membership. I’ve also done freelance writing for other blogs. My favourite methods are selling digital products and affiliate marketing. Advertising is probably my least favourite because the ads detract from the look of the site and take visitors away, but it can still be an effective method. Actually, almost all of my blogging revenue the first two years was from banner ads and AdSense.

I like selling digital products because the income potential is higher. If you have a successful product you can continue to sell it month after month and it becomes a somewhat passive source of income. I like affiliate marketing because there are opportunities in almost any niche, and because the pay-outs can be pretty high on certain products. Even if you create your own products, there are still going to be some complementary products or services that you could promote as an affiliate.

How did you prep your blog to make money?

The biggest thing was just getting traffic in the first place. If you’re monetizing the blog with ads (which was the case when I started my first blog), the main thing you need to focus on is just getting traffic.

With most of my blogs the past few years, I’ve been making money by selling my own digital products. To have success with that, I’ve had to find products that would be in demand from my audience, create a quality product, and then create a sales page and an offer that gets their attention.

The hardest part, in my opinion, is getting traffic in the early stage. Once you have some momentum it gets a lot easier, but starting from scratch takes a lot of work.

What are your aims for your blog in the future?

There are a ton of personal finance blogs, so my aim is to make Vital Dollar good enough that it really stands out. I’m trying to do that by writing in-depth content that is really practical, and not only teaches concepts, but shows people how they can take action and apply it to their own lives. I do hope and plan to increase my income by growing the traffic and by creating some of my own products.

Right now, my focus is on increasing traffic and building an email list. I make money through affiliate programs that are relevant to the articles I write, but my long-term plan is to create some digital products (probably courses) that I will sell from the blog.

If someone is brand new to blogging, what are the most important things to focus on if they want to monetize?

First, I think you need to decide which monetization methods fit best with your long-term goals. I don’t think you necessarily need to put all of that into practice right away, but it’s a good idea to at least know what you want to do in the future.

Next, it’s important to create a brand identity for your blog. What do you want to be known for? How are you going to stand out? What makes your blog unique? When you’re thinking about your brand identity, keep your monetization plans in mind.

For example, if you plan to create and sell a course on how to pay off debt, you should probably work to build your brand around debt payoff. Make yourself known as an expert on debt, and when you release that course you’ll have more success.

Can you think of 3 pros and 3 cons of blogging as a career choice?

Pros: 1) work from home, 2) work on something you enjoy, and 3) have a flexible schedule.

Cons: 1) difficulty with work/life balance, 2) the industry changes very quickly, so you need to adapt, and 3) friends and family won’t understand what you do.

What inspires you to blog and what is the best thing about blogging?

Honestly, my inspiration is mostly related to money and being able to provide for my family. For me, it’s a business. Even though I blog about subjects that I enjoy, it’s still work.

The best thing about blogging is the flexibility that it offers. I’ve been able to work from home for more than 10 years, which gives me more time around my family. Even though I work full-time hours, I have a lot of flexibility and can adjust my hours as needed, or take off whenever I decide.

Would you still blog even if you couldn’t make money doing it?

No, I wouldn’t. Blogging is what I do for a living, but there are many other things I would rather do with my time if I weren’t making money from it. As far as job is concerned, I love it. But not enough to dedicate hours to it if I had no hope of making money.

Do you think blogging is here to stay?

I think content is here to stay, but the formats may vary over time. So many companies use blogs for producing online content that it’s obviously a big part of daily life for many of us, and not going away anytime soon. But audio and video content are becoming increasingly popular. I think content creation will be here to stay, but it’s possible that written content will eventually lose popularity in favour of audio and video.

Thank you so much for taking part in my Money Making Blogger interview series and best of luck with your blog!

I get to write every day and make money by doing what I love.  It’s amazing and still amazes me each day, even two years into making money from my website.  It’s not without a lot of hard work though, so don’t be fooled into thinking you simply set up a website and voila, income starts rolling in.  If only!  I work 30-40 hours per week currently and my blog is my life!

In this series I am going to interview other bloggers who also make money from their blogs to hopefully inspire people to start a blog if they wish or to make that leap to monetizing content.  I also find it so interesting to learn what other bloggers are up to and even us full time bloggers can learn from each other and inspire one another.

    Money Making Blogger Interview

Tell us all about you and introduce your blog. What inspired you to start your blog?

Hey I'm Bex and I own and run my healthy lifestyle site The Art of Healthy Living. It takes the form of a magazine style blog, featuring articles both written by myself and others all about health, fitness, food, wellness and a bit of parenting, travel and beauty thrown in for good measure. I've always written since I was a little girl and have had aspirations to be a writer from then on. I actually started the blog to help my husband out - he runs an SEO company, but then the site progressed organically and it has now become my baby.

How long have you been blogging and when did you begin to make money from your blog?

I've been blogging now for 4 years and went full time after the first 6 months. It took a while to make money from it, well certainly enough to make it worthwhile. But what people don't realise is that making money from your blog doesn't just happen overnight. It takes a lot of hard work, involves making lots of connections and there's way more work that goes on behind the scenes than most people give credit for. I would say that really it's only been in the past two years that it has become financially viable.

How much money do you make each month from blogging? How many hours do you work on your blog each week to achieve this?

I work around my kids being at school, so that's generally between 9 and 3 each week day, but I also allow 'me time' to go running, meet friends and project plan my house renovations within that time so it can really vary depending on what projects I have on. What I make each month can also really vary - some months it can be as low as £500 whereas other months it can be as much as £3000.

How do you make money blogging?

A few different ways - sponsored posts, content writing, adverts, link building and also as a result of my blogging other companies have approached me to create content for their websites and I have also taken on a bit of book proof reading on the side.

How did you prep your blog to make money? Has it been an easy process to make money blogging?

Branding was key for me. I invested in a good designer who talked me through exactly what I wanted from the look of my site as well as how I would come across to people. It took me a while to realise that I was essentially the brand and that was probably the biggest thing to get my head around. It also really helps that my husband works in the industry and so I know I can go to him for any tech issues.

What are your aims for your blog in the future? Do you plan on increasing your income and how?

Onwards and upwards. I'd like to continue its growth and form more relationships with brands and collaborate with other bloggers.

If someone is brand new to blogging, what are the most important things to focus on if they want to monetize?

Creating a brand, blogging regularly, finding your voice, getting the all-important USP sorted and transparency ALWAYS.

Can you think of 3 pros and 3 cons of blogging as a career choice?

Pros - flexibility, it's such a great creative outlet and one that not only helps inspire others but also takes you on your own self-discovery journey - it's basically like therapy, there is something different every day.

Cons - freelance life is a rocky one - you never know when you're next project is coming in and you're always on the hustle, it can be lonely - you have to get good at making yourself leave the sofa and not wearing PJs all day, writers block - it's a thing and it can strike at any time - make sure you connect and collab with people to help inspire.

What inspires you to blog and what is the best thing about blogging?

I love the reactions I get from people when they read my blog and that is basically what helps inspire me too. When someone reads what I have written and can relate to it it's amazing. Knowing I have helped even just one person feel better about themselves, or made them laugh, or given them some useful information is the best feeling in the world.

Would you still blog even if you couldn’t make money doing it?

Probably, although it wouldn't be as frequent. I love the freedom that writing gives me and I think if I wasn't blogging I would be going a little bit crazy by now!

Do you think blogging is here to stay?

Yep, certainly for the time being. Although I think it will be flooded with more people who aren't that good at it and it will become harder to stand out from the crowd. Good content will always win however and people love hearing about other people's lives.

Money making blogger interview with Liza Tripsget (1)

Hello, please introduce yourself and tell us all about your money making blog.

My name is Liza and I run a travel and lifestyle blog for young adventurous professionals - Tripsget

How long have you been blogging for and when did you begin to monetize?

I’ve been blogging for almost 3 years now, however, I only started to monetise 1.5 years ago.

What's your monthly blog income like?

It’s relatively small, I’d say in the £500 range, but I work full-time, so I don’t accept many sponsored posts and don’t do massive outreach.

How exactly do you make money from your blog?

My favourite method is definitely advertising. I love Mediavine and I think it’s a great way to monetise your blog. I also get affiliate income and sponsored posts, but it’s less reliable and depends on the season.

Were there any steps you took to prep your blog for making money?

Not really, I just started producing better quality content.

Has it been an easy process to make money from your blog?

Definitely not - I had to learn a lot about SEO and spend a lot of time on social media as well. However, once I reached 25,000 sessions a month, it got easier.

How many hours per week do you work on your blog?

I work 10-15 hours a week on the blog.

What are your aims for your blog in the future?

I would like to grow it more and reach at least 100,000 page views in the next couple of years.

If someone is totally new to blogging, what should they concentrate on most to start making money?

    High-quality content and keyword research

What inspires you to blog and what is the best thing about blogging?

The fact that my content is useful to people and I get a lot of positive feedback! Also, free trips and stays, of course.

Would you still blog even if you couldn’t make money doing it and why?

I would still blog, but I wouldn’t write my posts around keywords, I would just use it more as a diary.

Do you think blogging is here to stay and why?

It’s definitely here to stay. It always existed in different forms, so why should it go?

Thank you so much for taking part in my Money Making Blogger interview series and best of luck with your blog!

Read on to discover how they make money from blogging and the steps they took to monetize their blogs.  Feel inspired and learn something new from this series!

If only!  I work 40+ hours per week currently and my blog is my life!

In this series I am going to interview other bloggers who also make money from their blogs to hopefully inspire people to start a blog if they wish or to make that leap to monetizing content.  I also find it so interesting to learn what other bloggers are up to and even us full time bloggers can learn from each other and inspire one another.

Money making blogger interview with Kacie of The Rare Welsh Bit (1)

Hello, please introduce yourself and tell us all about your money making blog.

I’m Kacie and I write a food and travel blog called The Rare Welsh Bit.

How long have you been blogging for and when did you begin to monetize?

I’ve been blogging for eight years but I only really began to make money from my blog within the last 2-4 years, and it increased gradually over time.

What's your monthly blog income like? (Pocket money, part time, full time or if you're happy to share the figure)

    Blogging is my full-time job.

How exactly do you make money from your blog? Tell us more about your favourite method?

Sponsored content, affiliate links, sponsored events, recipe development and social media promotions.

Were there any steps you took to prep your blog for making money?

No, I never set out to make money from my blog initially.

Has it been an easy process to make money from your blog? Why?

No. Many of my friends think I have the best job in the world, being able to eat out and travel all the time, but it comes at a cost. I work every day of the week and probably work far longer every week than I ever did when I worked full-time. It’s difficult to switch off when you need to be monitoring social media and ensuring a steady flow of content to your blog. My income fluctuates enormously too, which can be stressful at times.

How many hours per week do you work on your blog? Has this changed over time?

Around 60 hours per week currently and this has increased over time because my blog used to be a side hobby, but now it’s my full time job.

What are your aims for your blog in the future? Do you plan on increasing your income and how?

I plan to develop more of a passive income through affiliate advertising and I will be making more use of my journalism background to secure more freelance writing work too.

If someone is totally new to blogging, what should they concentrate on most to start making money?

Finding something they genuinely love, which they are prepared to blog about even if the money doesn’t come straight away - because believe me, it doesn’t happen overnight.

Are there any drawbacks to running a money making blog?

    Fluctuating income, big time commitment

What inspires you to blog and what is the best thing about blogging?

My love for writing and photography inspire me to blog so that I can share my experiences with others. I love being able to shout about the brands, products and destinations that mean the most to me and encourage my readers to try them out for themselves.

Would you still blog even if you couldn’t make money doing it and why?

Yes, and I did for many years. I am passionate about food and travel and I enjoy writing and taking photos, so I guess you could say blogging comes naturally to me.

Do you think blogging is here to stay and why?

I’m in two minds. On the one hand, if done properly, influencer marketing can be extremely effective and impactful. Sadly, however, there are lots of influencers buying their way to success through means such as fake followers and artificial traffic, combined with a general lack of adequate disclosure and transparency across the whole industry. I do worry that the blogging bubble could burst if these negative aspects of the industry aren’t addressed adequately in the near future, which is one of the reasons why I’m diversifying my income by taking on more freelance writing projects again.
