Easy ways to improve health this spring

Posted on

Although spring may feel like a time for new beginnings and a fresh start for many, some may find it difficult to shed their cold weather cocoon, and return to the healthy habits of season's past. Whether you live a hectic lifestyle, or are a busy working parent, it’s now time to embrace the season of sunshine, warm weather, and the longer days of extra sunlight. Spring is also a great time to refocus and revitalise yourself and your family to make healthier choices to jumpstart your warmer weather routines.

No matter what your lifestyle, there are plenty of easy ways to improve your health this spring:

1. Make your fitness routine enjoyable

Exercise does not have to be grueling. Spring is the perfect time to go out for a jog, take a hike, go for a swim, or re-discover a sport you used to enjoy. It is a chance to play and have fun, while enjoying the sunshine and fresh air. If you detest exercise then perhaps you simply haven’t found something you enjoy.  Try a few classes or different workouts until you find something that suits you.

2. Get plenty of rest

Make sleep a priority. It is one of the most important things we can do for ourselves, but is too often ignored. While sleep requirements vary from person to person, most healthy adults need between seven and nine hours of sleep. Keep your bedroom as quiet and dark as possible. Taking time to meditate for even as little as five minutes a night can help prepare your mind for sleep after a busy day.

3. Eat a well-balanced diet

Though most of us live a very fast-paced life, it is easier than you think to develop heathier eating habits this spring. Ditch the junk food and switch to fruits, vegetables, nuts, and whole grains instead. Eating two fruits or vegetables at every meal and one as a snack, means that you will be eating about seven servings per day.  It will also leave less room for bad foods.  This will give your body what it needs most-more vitamins, minerals, fiber, and less salt, sugar, and chemicals. Don't forget to drink plenty of water too!

4. Take time for you

The arrival of spring breathes new life, so be sure to stop and admire the beauty it brings! Breathing in fresh air and doing something as simple as spending time in your garden or even a walk in the woods can help put you in a positive frame of mind. Be sure to include yourself on your "to-do" list and take time to do the things you love. Spending time outdoors and getting out of the house and office, or wherever you have been hibernating, is beneficial in many ways for your overall health.

5. Catch up on routine screenings and doctor appointments

Now is the perfect time to catch up on those important screenings and doctors appointments you may have been putting off during the winter months. Preventive care saves lives. Maintaining your overall health and getting necessary check-ups is one of the key elements to living a happy and healthy lifestyle.

There are lots of ways to step into spring feeling refreshed and healthy.  Make sure you take time for you, eat well, exercise and get outdoors to be your best self.
