The home maintenance checks that can save you money in the long run

Posted on

Despite being your safe haven, your home can be quite a costly place to live. All those bills can really put pressure on your finances, especially if you’ve got a family to look after. That means you’re probably reluctant to shell out when it comes to home maintenance, preferring to deal with stuff on your own or simply hope the problem goes away. However, this can ultimately cost you more money in the long run.

If you don’t hire a professional to check these potential problem areas, they could cause damage that will be expensive to repair. You might not love having to pay them now, but you may regret not doing so if something ever goes wrong.

Roof

Without a roof, there’s nothing stopping rain and snow from filling up your home. Unfortunately, even with one in place, such precipitation can still enter your property and cause a lot of damage.

Roofs are subject to a variety of problems that could allow for water to get in and wreak havoc on your home. Whether producing mould, weakening the property’s structure, or merely drenching all your belongings, such interference can be a nightmare to deal with. Luckily, you won’t have to worry about expensive water damage if you arrange for someone to check your roof semi-regularly.

You might think this is a job you can do perfectly fine with just a ladder and some bravery. However, aside from the potential risks of going up on your roof, you also might not be able to detect a problem as effectively as a professional. Plus, if there is an issue up there, you’ll need to hire a roofer to fix it anyway.

Drains

If there’s a problem with your drains, it could lead to flooding, subsidence, or several other issues. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to see if there’s anything wrong with your drains when they’re located underground. That’s why it’s worth getting one of the CCTV drain surveys provided by Drain Detectives.

Their surveys can locate your drains and identify any cracks or defects in the pipes, which could lead to costly issues. This is a non-invasive procedure, so you don’t have to worry about the ground being dug up unless there proves to be something wrong. In which case, you’ll be relieved that the problem was found before any damage was done, ultimately saving you quite a bit of money.

Even if your drains prove to be fine, it’s better to be safe than have your garden flooded or your property begin falling into the ground.

Decking

Decking might not necessarily be the norm for homes in the UK. However, there are still plenty of properties that have this, and for them, it’s essential that it’s well-maintained. Should decking not be taken care of effectively, the material can rot and break, something which could cause serious injury to anyone who walks on it.

Even if you do your best to ensure that dirt, water, and sunlight doesn’t cause your decking to rot, it’s still worth having a professional check it out every couple of years. Wear and tear is natural, so even if you do a decent job of maintenance, there’s still the potential for damage. A decking expert will be able to identify if anything’s wrong and fix it, a task that’s better left to them than to you. After all, replacing a plank might not seem like a challenge, but if one of them has developed rot, there’s a good chance the rest of them will have too.

Boiler

Without your boiler, being warm in the winter months can be tricky. Annoyingly, though, while it might be essential for your home, it can also be a significant danger if something goes wrong. Faulty boilers can leak carbon monoxide, a life-threatening gas that’s difficult to identify because it’s odourless and colourless. You don’t want that filling up your home without you knowing, which is why an annual boiler check is essential.

You’ll want to get this done in the summer and ensure that you don’t miss a year, as doing so could be costly. Boilers are one of the more expensive appliances to replace, so paying to have them checked and maintained annually could still save you money. If that’s not enough of a reason to get it done, then the risks of carbon monoxide leaking should be.

Paying to have parts of your home checked can seem like a waste of money when there proves to be nothing wrong. However, this is money well spent because it means you have an assurance that this stuff isn’t at risk of breaking anytime soon. Get these checks semi-regularly and ensure things stay that way, and you won’t ever have to worry about paying for any costly repair jobs.
