  1. How I have grown since starting my UK lifestyle blog

    Posted on

Gosh.  How I have changed since starting this blog…

So last night I was flicking through my blog from the beginning posts.  Even though it’s only been a year and a half I have grown and changed a lot!

Looking at my old beauty posts, I would now not use more than half of the items.  I have become passionate about using chemical free beauty products which are preferably handmade from small businesses and even organic where possible.  I really believe what you put on your skin is just as important as what you put in, especially as many of the chemicals you put on your skin actually end up absorbed into your blood!  Shocking isn’t it!

How I have grown since starting a UK lifestyle blog

I also seemed to write quite a few chocolate or sweet treat posts.  Well I’m not perfect and I did indulge more than I should in such treats over Christmas, but day to day I now rarely eat such sugary snacks.  I prefer to munch on my beloved Nakd bars, fruit, nuts or one of my favourites is pure nut butter (such as almond or cashew) on oat or rice crackers.

I’m vegetarian and have always been interested in healthy eating whilst loving nearly all vegetables and fruits.  This love has definitely exploded in recent months and I now follow a mainly plant based & wholefoods diet full of nutritional goodness.  I mostly only drink still mineral water and have cut out coffee and tea which I used to drink daily.

It sounds strange but I feel cleaner inside and my skin is now absolutely wonderful.  At the start of my blog I was suffering from a lot of breakouts and I now don’t believe the chemical laden products or sugary foods I consumed were helping at all.  My skin didn’t magically clear up overnight, I don’t think that’s ever possible, but certainly a lot quicker and more noticeable than when I was using the mainstream shop bought products.  I now struggle to find a spot on my face which is incredible.

Ben and I were also takeaway fiends!  I say that, but we used to eat around two per week so still probably a lot better than most.  Our absolute favourite was Dominos.  Go back two years and we were probably eating one per week plus another takeaway another night, usually a burger or chippy chips.  Well this has long stopped.  At first we decided to have ‘payday’ pizza, so we would just limit it to payday or special occasions.  Then we really got into our healthy eating kick and virtually stopped altogether.  We had one on New Year’s Eve as a special treat and before that I think we’d not had one since September!  Really amazing considering how much we used to eat.  To be honest, I don’t even fancy them now.  Now we are eating considerably better I really notice the negative effects if I have greasy food and the satisfied feeling is definitely short lived whilst not as pleasurable.

So as you can see what I used to post about and what I am now going to blog about will be rather different.  I want a more wholesome, cleaner life inside and out.  I’ve even slowly been changing our household products to more environmentally friendly plant based products.  It’s great to make such changes and feel like a difference is being made.

My new style blog posts have begun.  I will complete posts filled with a few of my favourite foods, nutrition information, natural body products, fab items I have bought or anything that fascinates me!

I hope you will continue to read my new style blog and thank you for being a part of it!

  2. The Big Update – Why I Stopped Blogging

    Posted on

Why I took a break from blogging because of hyperemsis gravidarum

I have thought of writing this post for a while but was debating it as it’s a lot more personal than anything I’ve written before (mainly things I like and reviews).  But for those who wondered where my blog disappeared to, here goes…

I last blogged in July, so quite a while! It’s because I have very exciting news – I’m pregnant with my second child, a beautiful baby boy due in March!

I had to take a big break from my blog as I sadly suffer from hyperemesis gravidarum.  This is extreme pregnancy sickness, not the standard morning sickness most people seem to think the condition refers to.  I was sick several times per hour from around week seven, regardless of whether I ate or drank.  This condition is so severe it means the usual remedies for morning sickness do not work, such as travel bands, ginger, peppermint, etc.  You name it and I bet you I tried it all in my first pregnancy!

This time round it was far worse.  I became so sick I could barely stand up without almost blacking out.  Within four weeks I went from just over 9 stone to 8 stone becoming terribly weak.  At 5'7 I looked skeletal on my frame. I finally gave in and went to the doctors who immediately admitted me to hospital, popping me on a fast flowing drip! Wow. Drips are amazing!  I felt better within one hour!  I was kept in for 24 hours and filled with the drip goodness, after which I felt like a different person.  The women beside me in hospital could not believe the difference.

You may wonder why I waited so long to go to the doctors.

During my first pregnancy I was non stop back and forth to the doctors who constantly sent me home with another set of tablets that did not work.  I was never dehydrated enough to warrant going to hospital so had to just suffer the sickness.  I feared this would just happen again this time so didn’t want to waste my time or very little energy!  By the time I could barely stand up I knew things were much worse this time.  I had dangerous levels of ketones so I was kept in until these had disappeared.

The sickness continued once I left hospital, but nowhere near as bad. Stronger sickness tablets were fed through the drip and they actually worked (most of the time).  Luckily I have stopped them now as I really detested taking them.  I’m now only sick around once a day. Yay!  The nausea has gone and I don’t always 'feel sick’ so I can kind of get on with things as normal, well until the tiredness hits me around 5pm! The joys of pregnancy!  I’m 30 weeks pregnant this week and I just don’t think the sickness will stop this time.  It ended by 22 weeks with my first.

So that’s my giant personal update of why I stopped blogging.  As I am not my usual size (or self) I have not felt like doing any fashion posts.  I am mostly in huge pairs of tights, long vests and baggy jumpers… comfort all the way!

Why I took a break from blogging because of hyperemsis gravidarum

My blog direction is changing too

Regular readers will notice my beauty posts have started to change too.  I have become concerned with the levels of chemicals in most products leading to me going SLS and paraben free.  Well, this has somewhat become a passion, or perhaps obsession, in recent months (along with more chemical free wholesome organic food).  I now only use natural chemical free skin care products.  I have started changing my makeup to organic natural based products.  So far just my primer and concealer – one item at a time as it’s rather a costly process!  My skin is definitely thanking me for it and has improved greatly, 99% spot free now, finally!

I’m not sure where exactly I’ll go with my blog from now on.  I have become very passionate recently about healthy eating, adopting mainly a plant-based whole foods diet.  This has led to recent purchases of a juicer and blender as well as far more cooking from scratch.

Oh and we have now have Abel & Cole organic fruit and veg delivered weekly – very impressed so far!  We made our first wholemeal pizzas the other day which were totally delicious & so easy to make.  I also made some healthy raw chocolate brownies which would totally satisfy any chocolate cravings and only had four ingredients – yum!  So I think perhaps my blog will be taking a more wholesome turn.

I may start sharing my natural beauty finds along with some scrumptious smoothie, juice & food recipes.  What do you think?

As baby is due in March I will no longer blog as often as I used to (sometimes several times per week), but will perhaps aim for once per week.  The posts may become a little sporadic once the baby arrives!  I am certain a new born and two year old will keep me very entertained for a couple of months :)

So there it is - my first lifestyle blog post and explanation of where my blog posts disappeared to!

(Update - Since writing this I changed the direction of my blog dramatically as well as my lifestyle choices. I deleted hundreds of old blog posts which no longer representmy natural wholesome beliefs)

  3. Bella's Name Bunting by Patchwork Pawprint

Patchwork Pawprint Review: Handmade Personalised Bunting from Etsy

My daughter, Bella, turned two at the beginning of June.  I stumbled across this beautiful personalised handmade name bunting back in April or May whilst browsing Etsy for birthday gift ideas.  The pink and green had a sweet, girly cottage feel to it.  As we were due to move house I thought it would look just perfect in Bella’s new bedroom.  We actually ended up moving house over her birthday weekend, so needed to buy presents in advance so we could still celebrate her birthday amongst all the house move chaos!

Bella is quite girly so this design is perfect for her.  The best thing about ordering from small handmade folk is they are often open to custom orders so you can get exactly what you like.  If you want different colours or themes, perhaps more boyish bunting, then all you have to do is pop the maker a question with your requirements and they'll often be able to meet them.  You really can get something 100% personalised and bespoke to your requirements.

I ordered in plenty of time to ensure delivery for the birthday girl's big day (the shop also stocks off the shelf products, but I think it’s worth the wait for the personalised touch!).  The bunting arrived and it is so totally adorable, perfectly stitched to the highest finish.  It looks just right in Bella’s new bedroom, hanging proudly above her cute cot bed attracting positive comments from all who see.

If you are considering some similar personalised fabric bunting I would definitely visit www.etsy.com/uk/shop/patchworkpawprint who come highly recommended by me!  If you haven't yet discovered the joys of Etsy then what are you waiting for?  Find amazing unique gifts, home accessories and so much more!  It's the perfect place to support small businesses and stop buying mass produced products.

  4. The story where we move into our first owned home

    Posted on

    We've moved in!

If you’ve been wondering where my blog posts have been recently, I’ll explain.  The house move entirely took over our lives for the past few weeks!  A completion date was finally set (four weeks late) and we had two weeks to pack the entire house, organise vans, sell the bulk of our old furniture and find new furniture.  It was all a little crazy and seemed absolutely nonstop whilst working evenings and only passing over with Ben for ten minutes most days meaning we had to try and organise everything via text; just a tad stressful!

Only two weeks until we have our oven delivered!

The move took most of move day as we could not collect keys until after 2pm.  We luckily managed to get everything in one van and even squished two new sofas onto the back!  Apparently Ben and his brother provided great entertainment to an audience of Next Outlet staff!   They somehow managed to get a three seat and two seat sofa vertically onto the back of one very full van!

Two weeks on and we have managed to tear half the garden out, fill a huge pond, saw a couple of trees down, purchase almost all our new house furniture, paint the darkest blue bedroom white, white wash most walls, install a new bath and tile the bathroom, laminate one floor, add new skirting and fill the largest skip ever!  Phew!

My office is also coming along nicely.  The bedroom of our old house was turning into my stockroom with boxes appearing everywhere and the bed/floor was my packing station/office.  It was definitely not very practical.  Thankfully (and very luckily) I now have a converted garage room which makes a rather roomy office space.  I have so far installed a white corner desk/packing station, two sets of white/colourful storage units and a totally amazing purple fake leather quilted office chair.  I’m feeling very at home in my new work space already even though the walls still need painting, lights changing and decor purchasing!

I also could not blog as our internet was not installed.  It was due to be installed two Mondays ago when an engineer came out to fix a phone line.  I rely on the internet for my blog and online shop so we ensured we booked the installation as soon as we found out our move date.  Sky told us everything was in working order the next day even sending a text to say our broadband was active.  Well, we had nothing, not even a dial tone.  After several calls and a lady thankfully looking through all the notes, we discovered the engineer noted he couldn’t complete the job as we needed to go out; a total load of rubbish as we were home all day and evening.  The time of his note was 4.45pm so it would appear he just wanted to clock off for the day.  What cheek!  Another engineer was sent out one week later, but still no internet!  Luckily a third came today who actually fixed the problem.  Yippee!

I finally feel connected to the outside world again.  We don’t even have 3G here (well a connection occasionally appears on our bathroom windowsill)!  It’s mad how much we rely on the internet nowadays.  We felt unable to do most things as we use it so much.  We needed plumbers, electricians, window cleaners, tilers, furniture, to update addresses, the lot!  Google would always usually be our first port of call for such things.  I jumped for joy when a Thomson Local fell through the door but was shocked to discover only one window cleaner listed!  I suppose everyone just lists themselves on the internet nowadays (just to add to our frustration).  How on earth did anyone cope before the internet and Google?!  Annoyingly I rang most companies to update my address only to be repeatedly told ‘You know it’s much quicker and easier to do this online’.  Yes thanks.  I do know.  Probably a lot cheaper than all these 08 calls from my mobile too!  Thanks for this well known info, sigh!

All is well now.  Well, we still have a house load of work to do but I’m back online and in my totally fabulous new office!  I very much look forward to blogging and selling fab accessories from this new space, whilst also escaping from the madness of our building site resembling new house!

  5. Some very rare photos of me

Hello, this is Me! The Face Behind Lylia Rose

So far I have never posted a picture of my face, well not one that isn’t hiding behind a face mask!  This is quite simply because I really don’t like my face or any photo of it.  So here are some very posed selfies from the best possible angles, though I look a little fish pouted in that first one, ha.

    the real lylia rose

I just wanted you to know I am a real and normal person called Victoria.  I'm 28 and live with my fiancée Ben, 30, and we have a 23 month daughter, Bella.  We are in the process of moving house.  We are just waiting to exchange contracts and it will be my first ever house I have purchased so I'm very excited.  We will also have a garden for the first time in six years so I am extremely excited about this. Just in time for summer too!

I am a full-time day Mum to Bella, work evenings and focus on my Lylia Rose ladies fashion accessories shop in all my spare time.  I retrained last year to become a child minder through a fast track college course approved by the local council.  I also completed a level 3 qualification in childcare and education to enhance my qualifications and knowledge.  Once moved I will start my childcare business preparations (building a playroom & designing the website).  Hopefully all will go well and I will be child minding by the end of the year.  I will of course still run the accessory shop and UK lifestyle blog at Lylia Rose during evenings and weekends!
