How to use your creativity to make money online

Posted on

If you’re a creative person, there’s no reason why you shouldn’t be using your creative ways to make money online. There are so many ways of doing it, no matter where your skills lie.  So many people are already making money at home, whether that’s as a side hustle or earning a full-time living thanks to their creativity.  In this blog post I’ll share some tips on how you can use your own creativity to make money online.

It’s totally possible to make money doing what you love.  Nowadays it can be a lot easier to get yourself and your creative skills out there thanks to the internet and social media.  You can even learn how to make money on social media if that's your passion!  You can let a lot of people know very quickly all about your talents and even make a living from it too.

Both my husband and I have utilised our creative ways to make money at home.  I am creative when it comes to words and websites and I make a living by writing four blogs.  I love to read, write and research and I’ve managed to turn this passion into my full-time living.  Ben is creative with his hands and loves to make handmade furniture.  He sells several custom pieces of handmade furniture each month thanks to online selling platforms.

Things to consider if you want to make money online...

As much as it can be easy to get online nowadays and share your work with people far and wide, that also means the market is very saturated so it can also make it harder for you to be successful.  It’s very easy to set up a website in a few clicks, but there’s much more to running a successful creative business online.  Here are some things to think about if you want to make money online and turn your passion into your income.

Focus on one key skill of yours

Taking a scattershot approach to your attempts to make money online, you’ll probably struggle a little. Instead, you should focus on one key skill. This will allow you to really hone that skill and focus on it in an in-depth way that might not have otherwise been possible. Brainstorm ideas for how to monetize that skill and take things forward from there.

Understand your niche

When you decide which creative talent of yours you’re going to use to make money online, you need to throw yourself into that niche. Try to gain an understanding of how other people are making money in that niche, whether than means making money online with Google using your creative skills or making craft items to sell on Etsy. The more you know and the better your understanding is, the more successful you’ll be.

Do what others aren’t doing

If you have a particular set of skills that make you stand out from the crowd, use them to your advantage when you’re looking to make money online. If you’re doing things that no one else is doing, you’re going to find success much faster. Of course, your creative efforts need to be appealing as well. But if you’re just doing the same things as everyone else and there’s nothing to differentiate you, you’ll struggle.

Understand new trends

There are always new trends arriving and taking over, and some of these might offer you a way of making money. You should be aware of the trends that are big right now online and question whether you can ride their success and harness your own creative skills in order to earn big. It won’t always be possible, but don’t shy away from exploiting popular trends in order to make money online.

Don’t expect instant success

Whatever way you try to earn money online, you shouldn’t expect instant results. Things don’t happen that quickly and it takes time for you to see the results you’re looking for. Earning cash online isn’t easy and it does take hard work and effort. People who think it’s going to be a walk in the park often get tripped up and caught out by their overconfidence.

And, before you leave your full-time job...

There are lots of ways to make money online and many people are already successfully doing it.  I share numerous ways to make money online in this blog from making money with surveys to blogging, and from testing apps and testing websites, or even matched betting.  If you want to start making money online and maybe even reach the point at which you can leave your 9 to 5 job behind you, then get started today!

Identify your skill and research how you can make money online from it.  Once you have this decided then you can start making a plan and get to work.  It’s always sensible to start it as a side hustle at first to test the waters and to ensure it’s lucrative before leaving the security of your employed job.  You also need to think of practical things when going self employed, like how you'll plan for sickness when you're freelance and take holiday days, etc.

Another great bit of advice is to not have all your eggs in one basket.  If you don’t think your creative online business will bring in a full income, then you need to diversify your income.  Come up with a few side hustles that will bring money in and keep you topped up if you have a quiet month.  That’s exactly what I do.
